Musings

Weather and Color

It's a cold and rainy day in Cleveland -- reminds me a little of Snoopy's "dark and stormy night." But, I hear birds singing outside the studio and the robins I've seen in the past few days are very fat!  Just like Mother Nature, I think we're all looking to shrug off the binding coats of winter and step into the lighter clothes of Spring and Summer. My color palette is ready to explode with new fashion colors for Spring! (Well within branding guidelines, of course!)

The studio is swamped with projects at the moment -- a very good problem to have in this economy! But, as we all work harder, I am thankful for the projects -- and that Spring is finally here!

HAPPY SPRING!

Think Branding for Spring!

Whether it's a postcard campaign for your newest clients, or for those who you are courting as clients, a postcard is still an economical way to spend your advertising dollars. Designed correctly, a postcard reinforces your brand and keeps your name in the forefront of your clients' minds. For spring -- use bright colors and an uncomplicated design. Keep your message simple and your call to action clearly defined. Plan a targeted mailing campaign over several weeks and months, and determine how you will track the success of the campaign. A smaller, targeted campaign usually generates more ROI for smaller companies than a larger "blast" campaign with little control or tracking.

Turning Around Negatives

And, do not forget to make sure that you have up to date mailing information. If a card comes back to you as "undeliverable mail", immediately confirm the information with your database and then call the client for new and updated information. This always gives you a chance to interact with your client or ones you are courting. Take the negative of a wrong address or addressee and turn that around to a positive interaction and sales opportunity.

Spring is always a time when people are looking for new beginnings. Make sure your branding includes getting your name in front of your clients and targets this Spring!

Flux

Clouds.

Nature.

The market today.

Everything can seem to be in a state of flux. But your brand design shouldn't -- it should have a definite direction. And if a change is necessary, it should be deliberate and well thought out. A great read on this is "The End of Marketing As We Know It" by Sergio Zyman, former Chief Marketing Officer, The Coca-Cola Company. Although it's a few years old (my copy is from 1999), it's a really great read on what happens when you screw around with a company's top brand. For those of who have forgotten, Sergio actually came up with "New Coke" and seriously created a firestorm for Cocal-Cola. But, he also created an astonding amount of free publicity. So, a good read from one of the masters. Enjoy.

Things I find interesting

Getting a website up and running can be a wonderfully interesting experience. This site has been offline for a seriously long time because I have been putting my clients' needs first (which is the way it should be – in moderation). But, I'm back on track and working on the site again. So, hopefully, things will continue to evolve.

That being said, I have found a few wonderful websites that I will share at some point under "Web Links". One is Ellen Anne Eddy's art quilt site. If you have ever been interested in sheer design, even though it is not in paper, you should check out this awesome site. (www.ellenanneeddy.com)
